Scrubs Fabric Guide: Why Polycotton Fails in Singapore's Humidity

Ask why a set of scrubs feels unbearable by hour six and the answer is almost always fabric, not fit. The physics is straightforward and it works against cotton in this climate.

How moisture management actually works

Sweat cools you by evaporating. For that to happen, moisture has to reach a surface exposed to air. Fabric either helps or prevents it.

Cotton absorbs. Cotton fibres hold moisture inside the fibre, against your skin. In dry air, that moisture eventually evaporates. In Singapore's 80% ambient humidity, the air is already close to saturated and evaporation is slow — so the moisture stays where it is. The fabric gets heavier, stays damp, and stops cooling you.

Performance polyester wicks. Polyester fibres are hydrophobic — they do not absorb. Engineered yarn structures move moisture along the fibre surface to the outside of the fabric, spreading it over a wider area where evaporation is faster even in humid air.

The blends, in order of suitability for Singapore

65/35 polyester-cotton — the traditional default

Durable, cheap, holds colour. Also the worst performer in humidity of the three. It is still everywhere because it is inexpensive and survives industrial laundry. If your ward supplies scrubs, this is probably what you are wearing.

Polyester-rayon-spandex — the performance standard

Typically around 77/20/3. Wicks properly, has four-way stretch, drapes better and dries fast. This is what most of Cherokee's modern lines use and it is the sensible default for buying your own.

Antimicrobial-finished performance fabric

The same construction with a finish that inhibits odour-causing bacteria. Worth the premium in a climate where you sweat through every shift. Note the finish targets odour, not infection control — it is not a substitute for laundering.

Weight matters too

Fabric weight is measured in GSM. Lighter fabric breathes better; heavier fabric is more opaque and durable. For Singapore, lighter is generally better, with the caveat that very light fabric can become see-through under ward lighting — check before committing to a light colour.

What destroys wicking

Fabric softener. It coats fibres with a hydrophobic film, which is exactly what stops moisture transferring along them. Using softener on performance scrubs removes the property you paid extra for. Do not use it.

High-heat tumble drying also degrades spandex over time. Low heat or hang drying in shade.
