How to Clean and Disinfect a Stethoscope (And How Often)

A stethoscope touches the skin of every patient you examine and then travels to the next one. Studies have repeatedly recovered pathogenic organisms from stethoscope diaphragms in routine clinical use, which is why between-patient disinfection is treated as standard infection-control practice rather than an optional extra.

How often

Between every patient. The diaphragm contacts skin and should be treated as you would treat your hands — a shared surface moving between patients.

A fuller clean of the tubing, binaurals and eartips is reasonable at the start and end of each shift, and immediately after any visible soiling.

What to use

70% isopropyl alcohol wipes are the practical standard. They are effective against most relevant organisms, dry quickly, and are already on every ward trolley.

Soap and water works for the chestpiece and for visible soiling. Dry thoroughly afterwards.

What damages the instrument

  • Immersion. Never submerge a stethoscope. Water trapped in the tubing or chestpiece degrades acoustics and is impossible to dry properly.
  • Alcohol on tubing, repeatedly. This is the trade-off nobody mentions: alcohol dries and hardens tubing over time. Concentrate alcohol wipes on the chestpiece, and clean tubing with soap and water where you can.
  • Bleach and harsh solvents. These degrade tubing and finish quickly.
  • Autoclaving. Will destroy it.

The Singapore factor

Heat and humidity already accelerate tubing degradation here. Layering frequent alcohol exposure on top of that means tubing in Singapore genuinely hardens faster than manufacturers' temperate-climate expectations suggest.

This is not a reason to clean less. It is a reason to expect tubing to be a consumable and to replace it when it stiffens — see the maintenance guide. Replacement tubing is stocked in stethoscope accessories.

Eartips

Remove eartips and clean them separately — debris accumulates underneath where it is invisible and where it affects the seal. Replace them when they harden, discolour or stop sealing comfortably.

A 15-second routine

  1. Alcohol wipe over the diaphragm and bell, including the rim.
  2. Wipe down the tubing where it has contacted the patient or bed.
  3. Let it air dry — do not wipe it dry, contact time is what does the work.
